Editor's Note: Window on the Clearwater recently joined the Wednesday's Child network to help spread the word about children that are waiting for families to give them the loving care that they need. Each Wednesday we will profile a different child. For more information about Wednesday's Child and how you can be involved check the web site at: http://www.idahowednesdayschild.org/.

Jakara

Age: 8

"My name is Jakara, and I'm 8 years old. I like to ride my scooter and play with my best friend. We like to jump rope. We use two ropes and jump in the eye.

I like to go swimming, watch movies and play with my Game Boy. I like to do art and reading at school. Someday I want to go to Disneyland and ride on the teacups that go 'round and 'round. I would also like to ride a horse someday.

I want a mom that takes me shopping and lets me make cake with her and goes out to eat. I want a mom and a dad. I would like to be the only child so I can have my own room and have the attention I need.

Jakara's adoption social worker tells us she has a strong spirit and a good attitude, despite a difficult childhood. She works hard at being a good student.

Although she may seem cautious at first, once Jakara feels safe and comfortable, she becomes very animated and talkative. She loves attention and deserves it in large quantities. Jakara needs a parent who is kind, consistent and focused on her needs. She may push to find firm boundaries, but for parents who understand severe neglect, Jakara's testing behavior makes perfect sense. Sulks soon give way to smiles when she realizes an adult can cheerfully outlast her and still show love and empathy. Jakara is learning that rich rewards of attention come with each of her positive choices.

Through counseling and focused work within a therapeutic foster home, Jakara has made tremendous progress. She is ready for a lasting family that is multicultural or one that understands and will embrace her African-American heritage. In such a family, Jakara could share her generous spirit and begin relying on this rich environment to give her the attention she craves.

Jakara is available for adoption through the State of Oregon. For contact information, please contact Idaho CareLine at 1-800-926-2588.
