According to Sgt. Joe Slichter, 1877 is seen as the beginning of a cohesive Idaho National Guard, though at the time it was called the Idaho Territory Militia. In addition to the operations during Indian wars, they were involved in quelling strikes.

National Guard members served in the Spanish American War. It was soon determined that the organization was needed for both local and federal missions.

They have served in foreign conflicts including World Wars I and II, Vietnam and more recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. National Guard members also help with local needs and disasters such as floods, wildfires and major snow storms.

During the 1996 floods, local National Guard members were an integral part of the initial response, as well as early recovery efforts. Guardsmen from Clearwater County have also served in Iraq and Afghanistan in the war against terrorism.

Orofino's armory has long been a gathering place for community events. It is currently undergoing a major renovation that is scheduled to be completed in fall 2011.
