In the early days of the Orofino Fire Department, new members went through an initiation called 'Tom Toolin'. Not much is known now of what actually happened during the initiation. It was before former fire chief Elbert Snyder time, but he was told it was more of a tease than anything. Those being initiated were given seats and then asked questions. An electrical coil in the seats buzzed them and caused them to stand up at times during the questioning that they normally would not have.
Tom Toolin is mentioned in the early record books of the department, but not described.
