The Pierce Chinese Cemetery is the answer for Week 303 of Orofino History Trivia a special feature to celebrate the history and heritage of Clearwater Country.. Join in the discovery! Monday: A quiet place Tuesday: Not well known to most Wednesday: Some things have been removed. Thursday: They were attracted by gold. Friday: They worked hard. Saturday: At Pierce Monday: They were the second wave of gold seekers. Tuesday: They were buried and then dug up to return their bones to China. Chinese miners came to the Pierce area after the majority of those who flooded into the area with the gold rush left for richer finds. By 1866, the population of Pierce was more than half Chinese. They patiently labored the abandoned claims and were able to do very well over a long period of years. However, by the turn of the century, they had left the area. One of the remnants left behind is the Chinese Cemetery near Our Lady of the Woodland Catholic Church in Pierce. Though the bones of those buried there were exhumed and returned to China when the workers left, the cemetery remains as a part of the area's heritage. Sponsored by:
