During Chinook Salmon and Steelhead seasons, "The Wall" below Dworshak Dam on the North Fork of the Clearwater River is a popular place for anglers. Drive from Ahsahka to the area, especially during salmon season, and check out the variety of license plates from out-of-state and many different counties in Idaho. Sometimes the anglers are nearly elbow to elbow as they fish. Other times the area is very quiet. Salmon and steelhead runs used to go up the North Fork to spawn, but are now blocked by the dam. To mitigate this change, Dworshak National Fish Hatchery was built to raise both species and release them to swim to the ocean and then return for spawning. Clearwater State Hatchery was built later and also raises the fish. Amenities for anglers at "The Wall" have been added over the years to make it easier and safer for those who fish there.
