Jerry Nelsen, coach of the 1987 Orofino High School Basketball Team that went to state is the answer for Week 173 of Orofino History Trivia a special feature to celebrate the history and heritage of Clearwater Country. Thursday: State tournament Friday: A former coach Saturday: Current administrator Jerry Nelsen came to Orofino in 1966 when he was in seventh grade. His father was a supervisor for the construction company that was building Dworshak Dam. Nelsen graduated from Orofino High School. He started teaching in Orofino in 1977. He coached at various levels for 20 years and served as the varsity basketball coach for 12 years. In 1987, Nelsen took the varsity basketball team to state tournament. Even though they did not win state, a former team member, Shannon Wilson, stated that it was a memory that has lasted a lifetime.
