Component failure causes oil release into Clearwater River at Dworshak Dam AHSAHKA -- Petroleum-based bearing lubricating oil was identified to have spilled into the North Fork Clearwater River due to an oil cooler failure for the Unit 1 hydropower turbine at Dworshak Dam, Sept. 16. Project personnel discovered the spill early in the morning and took immediate action to shut down the unit and isolate it from the river to prevent any further release. To contain and clean up the spill, project personnel deployed containment booms and absorbents downstream of the dam. Upon discovery, project personnel immediately notified partner agencies, including the National Response Center, state emergency management offices, the downstream national fish hatchery, and local tribes. Unit 1 will remain out of service and isolated while repairs are completed and due to previously planned maintenance. Dam operations remain unaffected. |
