Fire causes extensive damage to Orofino home

A late evening fire Friday caused extensive damage to the home at 715 Riverside Ave. in Orofino, according Orofino Fire Chief Bart Jones.

The fire started in the attic and was caused by an electrical malfunction. The Idaho State Fire Marshal will do further investigation next week, Jones said.

All the fire alarms were operational and are credited with alerting the family who were able to exit the home safely since they were awake. Though damage was extensive, OFD was able to assist the homeowner and renter to get some personal items out before the house was secured. The family has been given the contact information for the Red Cross for resources they need, according to Jones.

OFD had 12 personnel and 2 engines that responded. Law enforcement assisted at the scene. Jones said it was helpful to the firefighters that the renter was able to tell them where the fire started and the layout of the house.

Jones reminds people to have operational smoke alarms in their homes.
