Check back for updates and corrections. According to White Pines and Fires: Cooperative Forestry in Idaho by A.B. Curtis, Herschel Swann was a University of Idaho graduate that had been on the football team. He worked for the Association before and during college days and was a very active, strong and dedicated worker. He was called up when World War II started and quickly became captain of his unit. His service was in the European Theater and he was killed during the Battle of the Bulge, believed to be around Albert Canal. He was born in 1912 and was 37 years when was killed. Curtis believed that he would have become a very successful businessman or worked in a leadership position of the forest service if he had lived. After the war when Curtis was in Europe, he checked at the American Cemetery near Cambridge believing that is where Swann would be buried. They were not able to find record of him and the superintendent of the cemetery felt that since nothing could be found on the books that he had been hit by a cannon ball and there was nothing left to identify him. To keep him in memory, a small, unnamed peak was named for him. it is near Beaver Butte and overlooks the North Fork of the Clearwater River. Sponsored by:
