(Courtesy of Ted and Donna Leach) The City of Orofino is in process of purchasing the parking lot at 246 Main St. (corner of Main and 1st. St.) with the intent of keeping it a parking lot. The lot, at this time, has 41 spaces with most of them rented by businesses in the downtown area. The city council in a split vote approved purchase from a group of investors at a cost of $97,225 or $8 per square foot. In 1976, the group of over 50 investors, primarily downtown business people, purchased the property to build the parking lot due to parking problems downtown. At the time, Mel Bryant had his flower shop there. The building was torn down, the ground leveled and covered with asphalt. Since that time, individuals and businesses have rented spaces so their employees and customers would have a place to park and take some of the pressure off Johnson Ave. Having that lot has made it easier for customers to access businesses on Johnson. Dennis Thompson has been the president of the investors since the group was formed and Donna Leach the treasurer. They approached the city about the purchase. There have been other structuress at the location, including a two-story school and a blacksmith/leather shop. Sponsored by:
