Nellie Somers Brown was the wife of Nat Brown, a Clearwater Country pioneer lumberman. Nellie died in San Diego at the age of 94 in February 1976. She moved to Lewiston in 1906 from Joliet, Ill., where she was born Aug. 4, 1881. She and Nat met in Lewiston and were married in Pendleton, Ore. They had two sons, Arthur Guerin and C.O. Brown. They moved to Weippe during the early 1920s where Nat was employed with one of the lumber companies, according to A.B. Curtis in his book, White Pines and Fires: Cooperative Forestry in Idaho. She was active in the community affairs and the instigator of many social gatherings throughout the area. Curtis said she was a very gracious lady and always in demand in the county and her community. The family lived in a "red house" in Weippe. It was a large company house in a group of poplar trees in the area behind what was the Durant Store. The house burned down, along with a number of other business places in 1926. That same year, the Browns went to California and lived there until 1953, when they decided to move back to Lewiston. Sponsored by:
