Old Ahsahka Fire burning northwest of Orofino The Old Ahsahka fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. this afternoon about 4 ½ miles northwest of Orofino off Old Ahsahka Grade. Initial fire size was reported at 40 acres. Numerous fire engines, heavy equipment, hand crews, and firefighting aircraft were dispatched to suppress the fire. The fire is burning in grass and timber. Structures are threatened. Any evacuations, if needed, will be issued by the Clearwater County Sherriff's office. The fire is currently 0% contained. The cause is under investigation. Part of the air attack can be seen just ot the left of the smoke.  Air attack included to helicopters dropping water on the fire.  One of the helicopters drops water on a hot spot.  SEAT (Single-Engine Air Tanker) planes arrive to drop retardant.  A drop spreads the red retardant that helps to stop the fire's spread.  One of the planes drops retardant on the fire. It is in the center right of the photo.  One of the helicopters making water drops, dips water from the Clearwater River just west of Dworshak National Fish Hatchery.  A shot of the fire in the early evening from across the river.  Sunnyside Fire Chief Rich Hull shared this photo of the fire. Notice the helicopter in the middle of the photo.  Hull also shared this after dark photo of the fire.  A shot from across the river shows the fire lighting up the area as grass and timber burn. |
