Memorable Christmas Christmas surprises come in small and memorable ways. When I was growing up, my family was financially poor. In first grade we were doing the traditional Christmas program, and we were asked to wear white blouses and red skirts. In those days everyone owned a basic white blouse. The only skirt that I had that was close to red was maroon-colored. I must have had a sense even at that age that we didn't have the resources to just go get something that we would have preferred. I remember telling my mother that my maroon skirt would work just fine. No more thought on my part was given to the issue. Come program night, I came down stairs dressed in my white blouse and maroon skirt. In the living room, there stood my mother with the brightest red skirt.
