Cheney man injured in rollover accident on Grangemont

A Cheney, WA, man was injured in a rollover accident at about mile marker 20 on Grangemont Thursday, according to Clearwater County Sheriff's Office.

At about 4:19 p.m., Clearwater County Deputy's, Orofino Ambulance and Orofino Fire Rescue responded to the scene for a report of a possible injury rollover vehicle accident. Tommy J. Nichols, 75, Cheney, WA, was driving his white 1999 Dodge 2500 truck with a 1997 truck mounted slide in camper in the back. Nichols was also towing a 1970 Toyota Land Cruiser. Nichols had reached into the back-passenger compartment area to retrieve some chips. Upon doing so, the right front tire of his vehicle went off the road and on to the soft gravel shoulder. Nichols over corrected and rolled the Dodge. When the Dodge started to roll over, the Toyota in tow broke the tow bar assembly and crashed into the trees down the embankment. As the Dodge continued to roll over the camper became detached and slid off the vehicle and landed part way down the embankment. The Dodge continued to do another roll over before coming to rest in the trees over the embankment, the CCSO news release said.

Nichols was transported to Clearwater Valley Hospital with unknown injuries. Franks Towing of Grangeville removed the vehicles and camper from the scene. No citations were issued. Alcohol nor speed were factors in the accident, CCSO said.
