It was developed with a cabin in 1926, replaced with an L-4 cab in 1930. The present 10-foot concrete base with R-6 flat cab was built in 1965. It has been used on an emergency basis since the early 1980s and is staffed by volunteers.

Diablo is in Idaho County about 16 miles southwest of Powell Ranger Station and at 7,461 feet elevation.

Those who have travelled to the top of Diablo Peak describe it at a beautiful place with awesome views of the Bitterroot Mountains and the Bitterroot Divide. Our winner, Mike Lubke said, "In my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth."
