Tuesday: Greer Wednesday: New Year Thursday: Thursday Friday: Not a normal problem Saturday: A tense situation Monday: Homes in danger Tuesday: Rain on snow Wednesday: Mud Thursday: Water diverted Friday: People evacuated Saturday: Saturated soil Snow had fallen on the area previously. During the night between New Years Eve 1996 and New Years Day 1997, it was dark and stormy when problems started to surface in Greer. What was usually a small stream was growing in size and threatening homes on the west side of town. Emergency crews, including Sheriff Nick Albers who was the Incident Commander during flooding earlier in 1996, responded. They worked to divert the water away from the homes. However, the soil was saturated and a mud slide came crashing down the hill behind the homes. Emergency workers had just enough time to jump out of the way. Fortunately, everyone one was okay and the people in the threatened homes were given shelter elsewhere until the the situation was resolved. Sponsored by:
